I think that leggings, a striped tee or turtleneck, and a chambray shirt are all basic pieces that everyone should have in their closet. By now, a utility jacket is pretty much a basic piece too. These pieces can be worn in lots of ways, and when it's super cold, you can layer them all together in one outfit like I did. We went to do a photo shoot Saturday (indoors thankfully) but I had to get to and from it in temps that only went to 38 for the day and 23 mile per hour winds. The hair wasn't going to make it and we were shooting in a gym that I thought might be cold and drafty, so a beanie was in order.

I love the little peek of stripes from under the chambray.

Dots on dots

This outfit was so much fun. I'll admit I got a few strange stares at the polka dot tights. How dare a forty-something year old woman dress like that? LOL. But I loved it and felt good in it all day. This outfit has been in my head since last winter and combines three of my favorite pieces- mustard cardigan, polka dot popover and this skirt. I'm glad I finally wore it.  If this popover ever returns to JCrew factory, snatch it up. Here are 9 ways I've worn it. It just won't stop.

Layering a button up shirt under a sweater is something that I have yet to master. I love the look on others but always feel like it adds way to much bulk around the middle to my short torso. It really has everything to do with what you are trying to layer. In my mind, these pieces would work, but in reality they didn't. Even though I like the color scheme of this outfit, I doubt I will ever repeat it. The shirt underneath is too bulky and the sweater is too thin. The shirt would work with a chunkier looser sweater and a thinner smoother shirt would work with this sweater. So, it really does come down to which pieces you are trying to layer.

I've also read about putting a tank between the two shirts for a smoother fit, but I've not tried it. I think it would be too uncomfortable. Have you tried it? Do you have any layering tips to share? I'd love to hear them.

By the way, did you catch a sneak peek of these shoes on Instagram last week?

Finds under $30- Saturday shopping

Since I'm still working on a new budget this month, and the under $25 posts seem to be popular, I thought I'd continue with these Saturday shopping posts under a certain price point this month. This time it's under $30 because it does get hard to continue to find great things under $25, but many of these items are still under $25 or very close to that price point.

I had a little trouble with some layering this week, and I'll be posting about that soon, so I think this faux layered top and this one are great finds. The pink skirt would be cute for a Valentine's day outfit and I've been crushing on pom pom beanies so I'll be keeping an eye on these items myself.

Happy Shopping!

I purchased this top back in the fall for two reasons- it has my favorite marsala/oxblood/wine color in it, and I knew it would work with my existing wardrobe (last seen here.) I know that I just wore these pants a week ago with black and leopard, but this is one of those pieces that I seem to be stuck on right now and insistent on making outfit after outfit with them. They were a perfect pair to this top.

Who's glad it's Friday? I know I am. It seems to get harder and harder for me to make it through a week.
