We had a photo shoot to do Saturday afternoon and the temps had dipped back down, so I had the chance to wear a few more of my winter favs before we are full on into spring. I got this faux fur pom pom beanie from Target a couple of months ago on clearance. It was one of those fun items I wanted but didn't want to spend a lot on, so I'm glad I waited.

I promise there is a pom pom up there. It's blending in with the background. Learn from my mistakes and take note of this photo tip: when choosing a location for your blog photos, make sure your outfit doesn't blend into the background. Likewise, make sure it doesn't clash either.

Layering basics

Beanie- Target  option  option  option

I think that leggings, a striped tee or turtleneck, and a chambray shirt are all basic pieces that everyone should have in their closet. By now, a utility jacket is pretty much a basic piece too. These pieces can be worn in lots of ways, and when it's super cold, you can layer them all together in one outfit like I did. We went to do a photo shoot Saturday (indoors thankfully) but I had to get to and from it in temps that only went to 38 for the day and 23 mile per hour winds. The hair wasn't going to make it and we were shooting in a gym that I thought might be cold and drafty, so a beanie was in order.

I love the little peek of stripes from under the chambray.

Finds under $30- Saturday shopping

Since I'm still working on a new budget this month, and the under $25 posts seem to be popular, I thought I'd continue with these Saturday shopping posts under a certain price point this month. This time it's under $30 because it does get hard to continue to find great things under $25, but many of these items are still under $25 or very close to that price point.

I had a little trouble with some layering this week, and I'll be posting about that soon, so I think this faux layered top and this one are great finds. The pink skirt would be cute for a Valentine's day outfit and I've been crushing on pom pom beanies so I'll be keeping an eye on these items myself.

Blinging in the New Year

Beanie- Nordstrom option option  option
shirt- JCPenney
sweatshirt- Old Navy option option option
sneakers- Macys option
worn Dec. 31, 2014

So I'm a little late for "blinging" in the New Year since it's already been here for almost a week and half. Oh well, I'm always a little late to everything.

I got this beanie for Christmas from the hubby and I was on a mission after Christmas to wear everything I got, so this was perfect for our New Year's Eve. We chaperoned our church youth group lock in. I didn't stay all night, too old for that, but we did see in the new year with them. We painted their faces with zombie makeup and they had a zombie theme photo scavenger hunt. Did you know Jesus raised the dead?

Here's a peak at the makeup the hubby did for one of the other chaperones.

Not my signature

Shirt- JCrew (thrifted)  option  option
jacket- JCPenney option  option  option
jeans- Levis
shoes- Macy's  option  option  option
beanie- Target  option option embellished option
worn Nov. 8, 2014

If you are a regular reader, then you probably recognized right away that this is not my signature look. Nonetheless, sometimes it's fun to try a different look. I started out with booties but they just weren't comfortable so I switched to my sneakers. I love these shoes and they have been a go to for "off duty" casual attire lately. Once I went with the sneakers, I decided what the heck, since I've got a sporty thing going on with the stripes and sneaks, I may as well throw on the beanie. I do like to wear a beanie once in a while in the winter, but I'm not so sure it really looks all that good on me. Maybe I'm too old for it. I was going to be outside in the cold night air, so the beanie stayed, regardless of looks. Sometimes function wins over fashion.
