Read most any list of wardrobe essentials and it will likely include the classic white button down shirt. But is it really a must have?

Of course I'm wearing a white button down shirt with this outfit, but I've never really felt it was a MUST have item. I don't think mine gets worn nearly as much as a so-called essential basic should. It has its moments, like this one, where it's serving a purpose and letting the vest and pants be the star, but a black shirt might have worked just as well. What are your thoughts? Is it really an essential?
I've also decided I would like to have a softer white button down. This one is years and years old, and while it has nice stretch, sometimes it can be too stiff and uncomfortable. Maybe that's why I don't wear it and don't think it's an essential. Any recommendations for a replacement?
Happy Hump Day!
