Falling into the trenches

Well,  that was a cheesy post title but I've never claimed to be good at catchy titles. This outfit does incorporate a trench and a fall colored pencil skirt, along with one of my go to button down blouses. I bet I can't even count how many times or ways I've worn this shirt. That would probably make a fun post to round up all the ways. It's a little difficult to find sleeveless trenches to link up, but this trench vest would look equally well with a pencil skirt and make other cute fall outfits.

You may notice something wrong with my right eye. I have had "inflammation" in it for the past week. It actually started a week prior with a sinus infection, cleared up then came back after the sinus infection was gone. The doctor says it is not infected, but it's inflammation. Other than the sinus infection, I can't really find a cause. Sometimes this condition is linked to other inflammatory conditions in the body but I don't have any of those. Nonetheless, I have had this red, sometimes painful eye for a week. It is beginning to get better, but I'd appreciate a few prayers for full healing.

Layering is tricky

Layering a button up shirt under a sweater is something that I have yet to master. I love the look on others but always feel like it adds way to much bulk around the middle to my short torso. It really has everything to do with what you are trying to layer. In my mind, these pieces would work, but in reality they didn't. Even though I like the color scheme of this outfit, I doubt I will ever repeat it. The shirt underneath is too bulky and the sweater is too thin. The shirt would work with a chunkier looser sweater and a thinner smoother shirt would work with this sweater. So, it really does come down to which pieces you are trying to layer.

I've also read about putting a tank between the two shirts for a smoother fit, but I've not tried it. I think it would be too uncomfortable. Have you tried it? Do you have any layering tips to share? I'd love to hear them.

By the way, did you catch a sneak peek of these shoes on Instagram last week?

Pinstripes returned

Worn June 2, 2015

This pinstriped blazer/pants combo has been worn lots in the past, but I gave it a break for a while. I brought it back with the blue stripe button down and some burgundy red shoes for a pop of color. Sorry about the pics. As I said earlier, it stormed all last week so these pics had to be taken inside.

A statement skirt

Statement necklace, statement heels, statement piece- we are all about making a statement these days. How about a statement skirt? I fell in love with this skirt at the thrift store. I love the rich jewel tones. I've paired it here with a simple white button down and black fitted blazer based on inspiration from Glamour. The white button down is another piece that I am learing to work into my wardrobe. It's always been so boring to me, but it's a nice compliment to a show piece like this skirt.

Blue, grey and a pop of red

For a work outfit, today I'm pairing the shirt from day 1 with the pants from day 2. So far I'm not bored and still enjoying the ease of the 30x30 challenge. Have you ever done a 30x30 remix? I'd love to hear what you took away from it. Did it change your style or thought process about outfits? I'm definitely focusing on accessories more.

Blue and red for Labor Day

shorts- TJMaxx option   option  option
shoes- Payless  option

Something about Labor Day makes me think of red, white and blue. It is an all American day.  For my casual day off work, I've paired a button down with red shorts and some cute flats. This is also the first outfit of my 30x30 for September. You can see my 30 pieces here.

I've previously worn this shirt to work, as seen below:

Mint and Navy

Blazer- JCrew Factory
skirt- Target option
shoes- TJMaxx
necklace-JCrew Factory
Worn May 12, 2014

I was prepared to totally copy J's outfit but at the last minute I switched the cardigan for the blazer. It was hot and humid and I felt like the blazer would breathe better than the snugger fitting cardigan. I love the results. I've also upgraded my thrift store navy pencil skirt for this one from Target. The thrift store find had an elastic waist and wasn't always the most flattering to me.

Fresh take

Blazer- thrifted; Shirt- Chicos-thrifted
pants- TJMaxx; shoes- Belk
jewelry- Target
Worn Aug. 21, 2013

When I saw Penny Pincher Fashion in her peach blazer and peach stripe shirt, I immediately thought of my pink blazer and pink striped shirt. Funny thing is, I've never thought about wearing them together before now and it's so obvious. I don't have white pants or jeans (couldn't wear the jeans to work anyway) so I paired it with khaki dress pants and some wedge shoes.

A pop of color

Cardigan- TJMaxx; pants- JCPenney; blouse-Sears;
shoes- Belk's
Worn Feb. 12

A layer or an accessory are easy pieces to use for adding pops of color. I went with the cardigan here. Just bright enough to keep this from being boring. Oh, and you have seen these pants way too many times, but you won't see them anymore. After 45 days on the Whole30 and a total of three months of paleo eating, I'm down 15 pounds and holding it off. Yay! These pants have been retired.

Checkered

Cardigan- Belk's (similar); shirt- Ralph Lauren - thrifted (similar) (similar)
jeans- Levi's; booties- Payless (similar) (similar)
Worn Nov. 2, 2012

Below is the outfit that inspired mine. I thrifted this shirt and when I saw this outfit, I immediately thought of putting these pieces together from my own closet. As you can see, you don't have to copy an outfit entirely. Just let it inspire you.
